I built this piece the way Paul Klee might have approached the sea — not by rendering fish, but by fracturing the picture plane into interlocking shapes until fish emerged from the negative space between them. Three sets of eyes stare out from a field of ochre, teal, cobalt, and marigold, while a pale form glides above them — read it as a gull diving for its catch, or a manatee breaking the surface; I like that the painting doesn't insist on an answer. It's a small, dense composition — every curve does double duty defining two shapes at once — hand-painted directly onto an 8×10" canvas in oil and cold wax, and set in a frame I painted myself in sage green and black to echo the palette inside. A graphic, high-contrast piece that reads as bold from across a room and rewards a closer look.
