-The coloration which separates this piece from regular maple is the result of ambrosia beetle activity within the wood. The beetle tunnels through with a fungus which colonizes the wood.
-Notice the mineralized streaks along with the attractive complement of wormholes.
-You should have no concerns about beetles and fungus. They are destroyed when the wood is dried for stabilization.
