This work is a photographic double exposure. The background is a photographed section of a painting from the rear of a diorama in a natural history museum. The foreground is a 19th-century scientific illustration of a fish.
The image is printed on translucent film, with silver leaf hand-applied to the reverse. Light passes through the film and reflects off the silver leaf, creating depth and a subtle shimmer.
The work is presented in a custom frame made by the artist, drawing on his many years as a professional woodworker.
All photographs are produced in editions of seven.
Peter Sandback received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
