Sam is part of my Tahoe friend group. Her dad was an artist, even if he wouldn't call himself one. She grew up knowing what it means to have a parent who needs to create.
She came to my home, saw The Wave hanging in my son's room, and something clicked. She came with a colour palette in mind, the blues and magentas of Kanaha Beach in Hawaii, a place that matters to her family. I followed her lead on colour and brought everything else: the layout, the sketch, the form.
Nalu, Hawaiian for wave. We installed it together, Josh and I, while they cooked Thai food for us. That's the kind of friendship this is.
