An unlikely friendship and a moral reckoning made this piece. A collector I met at Burning Man commissioned it for his home, a house full of hunting trophies. I am vegan. We disagreed and loved each other anyway.
Could I make something for that house and still be myself? Yes, but only on my terms.
The antlers are shed; the animal lived. The cotton is organic, hand-knotted. Ania Prange's metalwork evokes the hunt without the violence. We made the only piece in that house that no animal died for.
Fifteen feet by five, close to 200 lbs. Over 70 hours of work, 9,000 feet of rope, more than 10,000 knots. The metal elements were hand cut, the fiber hand dyed.
A rebellion and a reverence. Beauty does not require dominion.
